Brad Steinmetz
has designed for a diverse group of theatre companies including: The
Builders Association, Oregon Children's Theatre, The Virginia Arts
Festival, Chicago’s Redmoon Theater, Hand2Mouth of Portland, Denison
University (as the Vail Artist-in-Residence), and Available Light Theatre
among others. His designs employ unconventional materials, unique scenic
movements, and a mix of high and low technology.
He has been recognized nationally as the recipient of the Rose Brand Award
for excellence in Scene Design as well as regionally by the American
College Theatre Festival and the Peggy Ezekiel awards.
Steinmetz’s design work has been influenced by his travels to Cuba,
England, and the Czech Republic, as well as by his collaborations with
scenographers Jaroslav Malina and Marketa Trosterova-Fantova. His work has
also been shaped by his internships at The Royal Court Theatre in London
and the Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago.
His research interests include new works, spectacle and performance
objects, projections, non-traditional materials and techniques, and Czech
scenography. Steinmetz is an active member of the Union Internationale de
la Marionnette and the United States Institute for Theatre Technology. He
is also a founding member of the
for/word company
where he serves as production manager and resident designer.
He has published articles in Puppetry International and in
Theatre Design and Technology.
His design work has also been showcased in
Stage Directions Magazine
and in the exhibition catalogs World Stage Design (2005) and
Design Expo (2010) .
Steinmetz is currently an instructor at
The Ohio State University where he teaches design and technology.
